The First Mascot

The 1st Irish Wolfhound club was founded in 1855. In 1902 the Club had 3 members. To promote the popularity of the Irish Wolfhound and to help the financial situation of the Club, Capt. Graham decided to make a gift of an MascotIrish Wolfhound to the newly founded regiment of the Irish Guards.

At the Crystal Palace Dog Show 1902 a special class was created, “Irish Guards Presentation Hound Competition”. There were 8 I.W.s in this class, which was judged by Capt. Graham, assisted by Mr. F. Gresham and Mr. R Hood Wright. The winner was the 2 1/2 yrs old Rajah of Kidnal (*24.5.1900, Ch.O’Leary X Cheevra) , owner Mrs. Gerard. She was paid 30 Guineas for Rajah, which from then on was called Brian Boru. He was regimental Mascot from 1902 – 1910
